Letter to the Editor | Try this short-term fix for Wollochet onramp
With city/county growth comes congestion, and it’s long past time for Gig Harbor to address an issue with the WDOT.
The Wollochet overpass of Highway 16 was constructed about 1973, it is totally inadequate to handle the traffic 50+ years later. Immediate bandaid fixes could eliminate the off camber northbound onramp and extend the acceleration lane which is 50 yards too short (they could extend the Olympic acceleration lanes too), and that unfortunate situation could be remedied in a relative short time; it’s a constant slowdown with any significant Hwy 16 traffic.
In truth, the whole intersection should be blown up with Wollochet updated to 4 lanes crossing and the aforementioned onramp configuration improved. The developers seem to be in step with expansion, so should the infrastructure.
