Letter to the Editor | Washington should have a different state tree

Posted on September 2nd, 2025 By: Grace Carman

I am a Scout writing to you for the Communications merit badge and I would like to express my opinion that the Western Redcedar should be the Washington State tree instead of the hemlock for multiple reasons, most notably because of its cultural significance.

The hemlock tree is important to the timber industry, but the Western Redcedar is called the tree of life for no small reason. It can be eaten, worn, made into houses or boats, and many other uses. It is a source for food and shelter for elk and deer as well, and while the hemlock can support diverse ecosystems because it can grow under other trees, the western redcedar can actually increase the soil pH and improve the soil quality.

To top it off, while the hemlock is important to timber production, the western redcedar is highly valued for its durable, good-smelling wood that can be used for construction and crafts. Not to mention cedar plank salmon is delicious!

Thank you for taking the time to read and consider this. Regards,

Grace Carman
