Letter to the Editor | No motor vehicles on Cushman Trail

Posted on March 3rd, 2026 By: Shawn McWaide

Many thanks to Jim for bringing attention to these public safety risks.

On Jan. 19, I submitted a Traffic Complaint Form to the City of Gig Harbor. My complaint addressed two issues: 1) The repeated use of Cushman Trail by teens (probably) on motorcycles and 2) reckless driving observed (for example, wheelies) on Cushman Trail and Rosedale Road, near the pedestrian crossing at Rosedale Village and Cushman Trail, by teens (probably) on motorcycles.

Jim more accurately describes these motorcycles as electric dirt bikes and/or motorbikes.

The Cushman Trail has signage at the trailhead stating NO MOTOR VEHICLES. Dog walkers and parents with young children are at risk due to these motorcyclists’ unthinking and dangerous conduct on the trail. These motorbikes are illegal, too fast, too powerful, and too loud for use on a trail designed for pedestrian and bicycle usage.

Like Jim, I too fear accidents will happen …..
