Narrows Bridge lane closures will continue for ‘multiple days’

Posted on April 23rd, 2026 By:

Traffic headaches for drivers on the westbound Tacoma Narrows Bridge will drag on for multiple days, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

WSDOT closed two lanes on the westbound (toward Gig Harbor) bridge late Wednesday, April 22. The department said crews found “deterioration on the structure that supports (a) joint under the right two lanes.”

Two westbound lanes remain open and all drivers may use the HOV lane for the duration of the closure. In a news release Wednesday morning, the state didn’t say how long that might be — other than “multiple days.”

The onramp from Jackson Avenue in Tacoma to westbound 16 also is closed.

WSDOT has closed lanes on the 76-year-old westbound span repeatedly in recent years, often to perform expansion joint repairs. Such closures occurred in September 2025 and in FebruaryMayJune and December 2024.

The department recommends drivers watch its real-time traffic map and sign up for email updates.
