Mother’s Day Market
The green adjacent to B’s Bagels and Butters, 3308 Uddenberg Lane, will be the site of a two-day Mother’s Day market with local food and craft vendors selling permanent jewelry, fresh flowers, candles and sweet treats like shaved ice and chicken and waffles. The market runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 9 and 10. Read our story about the market for more information.

Arts and Crafts Market
The Fox Island Mother’s Day Arts and Crafts Market is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at the Nichols Community Center, 690 Ninth Ave. The market will have local, handmade arts and crafts perfect for last-minute Mother’s Day gifts.
Spring fling
Three venues — The Beer Vault, Olalla Winery and Yoked Farmhouse – are partnering to host a Sip Spring Fling event from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 9. They bill the event as equal parts fun, flavor and a whiff of mischief. Visit each location and support a good cause: Helping women rebuild their lives after prison. Tickets cost $85 and include a free beverage and snacks, craft activities and plenty of photo ops at each stop. Buy tickets here.

Plant sales and seed swaps
Gig Harbor’s Dragon Boat team will host a Dragons in Bloom plant sale at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 9, at Locust Cider, 3207 57th St. Ct. NW. Find flowering plants, herbs, succulents and more, plus botanically inspired arts and crafts.
Also on May 9, Half Wild Homestead, 10205 86th Ave. NW in Rosedale, has a pop-up market featuring fresh flowers, veggie starts, body and bath products, pet treats and other treasures. Bring your compostables – like chemical-free grass clippings, coffee grounds, fruit and vegetable scraps and so forth – to trade for a free veggie start. There’s also a plant and seed swap. The pop-up market runs from noon to 5 p.m.
The Beer Vault hosts a plant sale from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 10, featuring plant starts from Ian’s Green Thumb. You’ll find tomatoes, beans, peas, peppers, cruciferous and leafy vegetables, cucumbers, pumpkins, squash and more. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Gig Harbor/Key Peninsula Special Olympics. The Beer Vault is at 14004 Purdy Dr.
Craft and flower workshops
Hidden Harbor Wine Library, 8805 N. Harborview, Ste. 204, hosts a Sips and Stems workshop from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 8, to sip wine and create a bouquet of peonies, ranuculus, sweet peas, stock and other flowers. Wine and flowers are included in the $115 ticket, available here.
Make a wooden flower arrangement Saturday and Sunday, May 9 and 10, at MD Studio, 3028 Harborview Dr. Each workshop starts at 10 a.m. and costs $48. Sign up here.
Paint and sip
The Gig Harbor Library will team up with American Red Cross for a Paint and Sip Tea at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 5. Geared to teens age 13-18, the free event will show how art can be therapeutic. The library is at 4424 Point Fosdick Dr.
Book discussions
The Gig Harbor Literary Society meets at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, at Harbor History Museum to discuss “Black Cake” by Charmaine Wilkerson. Discussions are free and all are welcome, whether or not you’ve read the book.
Invitation Book Store hosts a conversation between local writers Marie Bostwick and Kristy Woodson Harvey at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, May 10. Woodson Harvey is the winner of the Lucy Bramlette Patterson Award for Excellence in Creative Writing and a finalist for Southern Book Prize. Curtain going up
Gig Harbor High School’s production of Steven Sondheim’s musical “Into the Woods” opens at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 7, in the school auditorium, 5101 Rosedale St. Take a walk through the enchanted woods and meet Cinderella, Jack, Little Red Riding Hood, the Baker and his Wife and a mischievous Witch — where happily-ever-after isn’t always what it seems.
Performances are 6 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 7, 8, 9 and 15, and 1 p.m. Sunday, May 17. The school band will provide the music for the production, and the GHHS Performing Arts Boosters will have concessions and a raffle during intermission at each performance. Tickets are $18 for adults; $15 students and seniors here.

Curtain going down
The final performance of Ghostlight Performing Arts’ female version of Neil Simon’s “The Odd Couple” takes place Sunday, May 10, on Fox Island. In honor of Mother’s Day, there will also be a “lunch with mom” at noon, followed by the performance at 2 p.m. Tickets are $35 for lunch and the show or $20 for the 2 p.m. show only here.
Seagull calling contest
Up the road at Port Orchard’s Waterfront Park, the 35th annual Seagull Calling Contest takes place at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 9. Join the fun and show off your “squawk,” or cheer for your favorites.
As always, bribery of judges and seagulls is allowed. Simple props and costumes are encouraged and good sportsmanship is mandatory. Registration opens at 9 a.m.; the contest starts around 2 p.m. All ages are welcome at this free, family friendly event.
Work party
Crescent Valley Alliance will host a work party at the Native Habitat Demonstration Garden at Crescent Creek Park from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Friday, May 8. Volunteers will remove invasive plants and prune native plants and trees. Bring your garden tools. The park is located at 3303 Vernhardson St.
Livable Communities Fair
The 22nd annual Livable Communities Fair takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at the Key Peninsula Civic Center, 17010 S. Vaughn Road NW. Representatives from senior and child care services, government agencies, social clubs, health care providers, environmental and arts organizations will share information about their work.
Fun and games
PenMet Parks hosts Family Fun Night from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 8, at the Recreation Center, 2524 14th Ave. NW with video games, an obstacle course, board and yard games and more. Free, but registration is required here.
Ocean5, 5268 Point Fosdick Dr. hosts Trivia Night at 6 p.m. Thursdays. Gather your team and test your knowledge of pop culture, science, history and more.

Kimball Coffeeshop hosts the Trailer Park Kings at 7 p.m. Friday, May 8 in a South Sound Blues Association-sponsored event. Kimball is at 6659 Kimball Dr.
Local singer-songwriter Sweet Mary Farr plays at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 8, in the loft at Olalla Winery. Tickets are $20. On Saturday, May 9, the Winery hosts salsa dancing in the loft, with lessons at 6 p.m. and dancing at 7 p.m. Tickets are $50 per couple. Buy winery event tickets here.
Sofia Talvik takes the stage at the Olalla Community Hall, 12970 Olalla Valley Rd. S.E., on Saturday, May 9. The evening starts with an all-welcome potluck at 6 p.m.; with music at 7 p.m. Suggested donation is $20.

At the movies
This week’s SummerFest movie at the Galaxy Theatres in Uptown is “Minions: The Rise of Gru” showing at 10 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, May 5; at 10:15 a.m. and 3:35 p.m. Wednesday, May 6; and 10:45 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. Thursday, May 7. SummerFest movies are just $3.50.
Starting Friday, May 8, the SummerFest movie is “Paddington.” Showtimes are 1 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 9 and 10; 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Monday, May 11 and Tuesday, May 12; 10:25 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 13; and 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Thursday, May 14.
The Flashback Cinema movie at the Galaxy on Wednesday, May 6, is “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” the Python’s take on the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Roundtable, with Graham Chapman, Terry Gillman, Eric Idle and John Cleese.
Opera lovers will enjoy an encore performance of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin showing at 1 and 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6.
On Sunday, May 10 and Wednesday, May 13, the Galaxy Classic movie is “The Wizard of Oz,” the 1939 film that starred Judy Garland as Dorothy and Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch of the West. Showtime is 12:30 p.m. on Mother’s Day and 6 p.m. on May 13.
The Galaxy Classic on Monday, May 11, is the 1938 version of “The Adventures of Robin Hood” starring Errol Flynn as the outlaw leader of a rebel army who fights against oppression by Prince John and the Norman lords. Also starring Basil Rathbone, Claude Rains and Olivia DeHavilland. Showtimes are 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Classic movies are just $5.
Also on Monday, May 11, the Galaxy will show a $5 Mystery Movie at 7 p.m., with no title reveal until showtime. It’s perfect for film buffs who like surprises and unexpected gems. Showtime is 7 p.m.

Civic engagement
The city of Gig Harbor Public Works department hosts an open house from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, at Peninsula Baptist Church, 6127 38th Ave. NW, regarding upcoming work on 38th Avenue. The project will close sections of the street while upgrades are made to the roadway, and stormwater and sewer systems. Learn more here.
State Reps. Michelle Valdez and Adison Richards and state Sen. Deb Krishnadasan will participate in a Legislative Appreciation Reception at 5 p.m. Monday, May 11, at the Civic Center, 3510 Grandview St. Following the reception, the city council will meet at 5:30 p.m. to vote on an amendment to a contract for work at Lift Station 1A and to approve a feasibility study for a stormwater park on Soundview Drive.
Attorneys from TacomaProBono will offer free advice at a legal aid pop-up from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, at the Civic Center, 3510 Grandview St. The lawyers can handle issues such as eviction, landlord-tenant relations, family and consumer law, and civil law.
