Gig Harbor Now’s Enchanted Forest fundraiser takes place at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, at Kopahuck State Park.

The event features dinner, an auction and entertainment by stand-up comedian Jerry Miner. Your support helps us continue to bring you news, features, sports and special coverage of community events. Buy tickets here.

Fall Farmers Market starts Sept. 8

A new Fall Farmers Market launches on Tuesday, Sept. 8, in the parking lot at B’s Bagels, 3308 Uddenberg Lane.

Shoppers will find fresh fall produce, local seafood and other goods. Ava Lin will provide the market music on Sept. 8.

The new location is more convenient for vendors to park and set up their booth space. According to Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance Market Manager Meg Norris, shoppers can expect at least five local farms and homesteads offering late-summer produce like tomatoes, corn, zucchini, greens, root vegetables, winter squash and fresh herbs.

B’s Bagels will stay open until 7 p.m. selling bagels and beverages.

The fall market will continue every Tuesday in September, from 4 to 7 p.m.

Book discussion

The Gig Harbor Literary Society meets at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1, at Harbor History Museum to discuss “Girls of Atomic City” by Denise Kiernan. It’s the story of the thousands of young women who worked as part of the Manhattan Project during World War II, unknowingly enriching uranium for the atomic bomb. Literary Society meetings are open to everyone, whether or not you’ve read the book. The museum is at 4121 Harborview Dr.

Apron display

Harbor History Museum hosts a display of aprons and other items entered in the Community Apron Maker Contest. Cast your vote for your favorite apron for People’s Choice Award. The winner will be announced at the museum’s History Rocks fundraiser on Sept. 19.

The museum also is offering an online auction as part of its History Rocks fundraiser. Items available for bid include a Willits canoe, a model kit of the British Royal Navy ship HMS Victory, custom cocktail glasses from the old Pearls by the Sea restaurant and more. Make bids here starting at 7 a.m. Monday, Sept. 7.

Row the Porpoise

Sunday, Sept. 6 is the last day to join other community members rowing the Porpoise. It’s a replica of the captain’s gig that carried the first Western explorers into Gig Harbor bay. It’s free, but reservations are required here.

Join the Peninsula Community Chorus

Peninsula Community Chorus hosts an introductory session for prospective singers at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, at Gig Harbor High School, 5101 Rosedale St. Meet the chorus director and other singers and hear the music the chorus will be singing this fall. Rehearsals will take place every Tuesday, with the performance dates to be announced.

At the library

Attorneys from Tacomaprobono will offer free advice on issues like family law, wills, housing, landlord-tenant relationships and more from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, at the Gig Harbor Library, 4424 Point Fosdick Dr. The lawyers also will provide information about Pierce County’s Eviction Prevention Program.

Teens get together at the library at 4 p.m. Tuesdays for STEAM and other activities. This week’s projects are making resin stationary and creating vision boards. Library activities are free.

Fun and games

Locust Cider, 3207 57th St. Ct., hosts trivia at 6 p.m. Wednesdays. On Friday, Sept. 4, it’s Drag Bingo hosted by Hanna MiaJoint.

Ocean5 has family bingo at 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Let’s Get Quizzical trivia at 6 p.m. Thursdays. On Friday and Saturday, Sept. 4 and 5, it’s the Samuel J. Comroe Comedy Special at 7 p.m. for adults 21-plus.

The Beer Vault, 14004 Purdy Dr. has Trivia at 6:30 p.m. Thursdays.

Hidden Harbor Wine Library has bingo on Mondays and canasta on Thursdays, both starting at 4:30 p.m. at 8805 N. Harborview Dr. Suite 204.

The Float hosts karaoke from 8 p.m. to midnight Fridays at 14511 Sherman Dr. NW in Purdy.

Live music

The Harbor Ukulele Group meets at 11 a.m. Saturdays at the Point Fosdick Library to share tunes. Newcomers are welcome.

Kimball Coffeehouse hosts an open mic every Thursday, with signups at 5:30 p.m. and music at 6 p.m. James Lee Murray band plays neo and nostalgic soul, R & B and a bit of funk at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, at Kimball, 6659 Kimball Dr.

The Core Four, a Grateful Dead-influenced Gig Harbor band, plays at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4 at Locust Cider. Denise Tremblay joins them for hippy-honky tonk tunes. The Ready Vessels play jazz based rock at Locust Cider at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5 . Both events are all-ages shows.

Meghanne Storey and Lynn Sorenson provide the music in the vineyard at Olalla Winery at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4. Tickets are $20 here.

At the movies

This week’s SummerFest Movie at the Galaxy Theatres in Uptown is “Happy Feet,” about Emperor penguins who find their soul mates through song, and a baby penguin who can’t carry a tune but can dance. Showtime: 10 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, Sept. 1 through 3.

Starting Friday, Sept. 4, it’s “Kung Fu Panda 4” showing at 11:45 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. Saturday through Monday, Sept. 5 through 7; and 11:45 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8. SummerFest movies are just $3.50.

The Galaxy’s Flashback Cinema movie Tuesday through Thursday, Sept. 1 through Sept. 3, is “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone 25^th Anniversary.” It shows at 7 p.m. each day and at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2. Next week it’s “Pacific Rim,” showing at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday and Monday, Sept. 6 and 7, and 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9. Flashback movies are just $7.

The Friday Night Fright film on Sept. 4 is “It” (2017). Showtime is 8:45 p.m., with tickets just $6.

The Galaxy Classic movie at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 7, is the 1965 Academy Award winner “Doctor Zhivago.” Tickets are $5.

The Galaxy will show a Mystery Movie at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 7, with the title revealed at showtime. Mystery Movies are just $6.

Civic engagement

The city of Gig Harbor Lodging Tax Advisory Committee meets at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, at the Civic Center, 3510 Grandview St., to review applications for this year’s LTAC grants. Applicants include the Gig Harbor BoatShop, Harbor History Museum, Downtown Waterfront Alliance, Permission to Start Dreaming Foundation, Gig Harbor Canoe and Kayak Racing Team, Gig Harbor Film Festival and the Chamber of Commerce. The Gig Harbor Planning Commission meets at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, to continue a public hearing regarding amendments to the city’s development code. Tune into the meeting via Zoom here.
