Harbor Happenings: Veterans Day ceremony honors heroes
Since 1919, Nov. 11 has been set aside to honor our nation’s veterans. Locally, Veterans Day will be celebrated from noon to 2 p.m. Friday at the Gig Harbor Antique Airplane Museum.
This year’s event begins with a flag ceremony and includes music, inspirational speakers and a free lunch for all vets.

AWOB Power Series
Every month, Gig Harbor’s Alliance of Women Owned Businesses hosts a “Power Series” get-together so local business owners can connect with one another, share tips and stories and build their skills. This month’s meeting takes place at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, at Canterwood Golf & Country Club.

Girls’ Night Out
The Downtown Waterfront Alliance’s award-winning Girls’ Night Out shopping and dining spree is back in person on Nov. 10. Find the latest information, including where to purchase tickets, on the Girls’ Night Out Facebook page.
Indulge for the Senior Center
The Greater Gig Harbor Foundation hosts a “sip and savor” fundraiser for the Senior Center, starting at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Yacht Club.
Savor tasty tidbits from Massimo’s Italian Bar & Grill, Millville Pizza, Roll Out Lumpia, Los Encantos Bakery and Table 47.
Enjoy beverages provided by Wet Coast Brewing, Heritage Distillery, Soulberry Coffee, Two Loons Winery and Locust Cider.
There will also be a silent auction, and guitarist Rob Rigoni will add musical embellishment.

Flashback Cinema
This Sunday’s Flashback Cinema movie at Gig Harbor’s Galaxy Uptown Theater is “Dr Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” playing at 12:30 and 6 p.m. on Nov. 13. The movie plays again next Wednesday, same times, same location. Tickets cost $5. The theater is located at 4649 Point Fosdick Drive.
Salmon viewing
If you find yourself walking the trail that connects Donkey Creek Park to Austin Park at txʷaalqəł Estuary, keep a lookout for salmon in the creek. And take a moment to fill out the log book, even if you don’t spot any salmon. This helps Harbor WildWatch keep track of when the salmon arrive each year and the best times to see them.
Chum salmon’s silvery ocean bodies turn to maroon and olive vertical stripes when they spawn.
Looking ahead
- The Chum Festival is back in person Nov. 19 and 20 to celebrate the return of chum salmon to Donkey Creek. Harbor WildWatch sponsors the free, family-friendly festival at the Harbor History Museum. More details will be provided soon. Harbor WildWatch will also offer a Junior Naturalist Workshop on Nov. 19 as part of the Chum Festival.
- The Basket Brigade provides Thanksgiving dinners to less fortunate families in our community. This year’s Basket Brigade is Nov. 22 and 23 at a to-be-announced location. To donate food or money, or to volunteer to help procure food, assemble or deliver baskets, click here.
- Holiday shopping shifts into overdrive Nov. 26 and 27 at Peninsula High School’s Winterfest. Artists and crafters from throughout the Puget Sound area will show and sell their wares at this popular holiday event. Students and staff of Peninsula High School’s leadership class organize Winterfest each year to raise funds for school clubs, athletics, assembly speakers and ASB supplies. In the process they learn about advertising, organization, communication and teamwork.
