Expansion joint again forces lane closures on westbound Narrows Bridge

A troublesome expansion joint will once again close lanes of the westbound Tacoma Narrows Bridge on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 19 and 20.

The Washington State Department of Transportation announced Monday that the right two lanes of the bridge will close at 8 a.m. Friday. So will the on-ramp to westbound Highway 16 at Jackson Avenue in Tacoma.

WSDOT expects the lanes to re-open by 10 p.m. Saturday. The HOV lane will be open to all travelers for the duration of the closure.

The westbound (toward Gig Harbor) span is the elder of the two Narrows bridges, built in 1950. Expansion joint repairs have forced lane closures on many occasions in the past couple of years, including in February, May, June and December 2024.
