Borgen Boulevard repairs require weeklong closure of westbound lanes

All westbound lanes of Borgen Boulevard between Peacock Hill and Olympus Way will be closed for a week starting Friday, June 17, the city of Gig Harbor announced.

During the closure, drivers will be detoured around the closure via Peacock Hill Avenue, North Harborview Drive, Burnham Drive and Harbor Hill Drive.

The emergency closure of Borgen Boulevard comes after months of the city and its contractors working to get to the bottom of a pavement failure near the roundabout at Borgen and Olympic Drive.

Heavy rain in recent months caused a small portion of Bergen Drive to sink, and multiple attempts to patch the roadway failed.

A sinkhole was discovered beneath the pavement and, after the city council declared an emergency to hasten repairs, unstable soil was determined to be the ultimate source of the problem.

Starting Friday, a contractor will perform emergency repairs. According to a city of Gig Harbor Facebook post, the repair will involve “removing a significant section of the westbound travel lanes, installing a structural fabric and subgrade, then replacing the asphalt roadway, the concrete curb and gutter.”

“To complete this work the right way and avoid future occurrences, our only option is the complete closure of all westbound lanes of Borgen Boulevard between Peacock Hill Avenue and Olympus Way for ONE WEEK beginning this Friday, June 17,” the city said on Facebook.
