Peninsula, Gig Harbor open 2023 football seasons with road rematches

Peninsula and Gig Harbor both open their 2023 high school football seasons on the road on Thursday, Aug. 31.

• The Seahawks play Enumclaw at 7 p.m. Aug. 31 at Enumclaw Stadium, 1456 Roosevelt Ave. It’s a rematch of the same two teams’ 2022 opener, when the Hornets squeezed past Peninsula for a 29-27 win. Enumclaw advanced to the state Class 2A semifinals before losing to eventual champion Lynden.
• The Tides face Spanaway Lake at 7 p.m. Aug. 31 at Art Crate Field, 22001 38th Ave. E. in Spanaway. It’s another season-opening rematch. The Tides blanked the Sentinels, 20-0, on Sept. 2, 2022. Spanaway finished the season 7-3 overall, beating Garfield in a playoff game before falling to Eastside Catholic.

Both local schools play two nonleague games before opening the South Sound Conference football season with a Fish Bowl showdown on Sept. 15 at Roy Anderson Field.

Peninsula finished 8-3 in 2022, beating Arlington in the playoffs before falling to eventual Class 3A state semifinalist O’Dea, 42-28. The Seahawks were second in the South Sound Conference at 6-1, losing only to state champion Yelm.

Gig Harbor finished 6-4 in 2022, falling to Kelso 43-34 in a playoff game. The Tides went 4-3 in the South Sound.
